Bringing back the Gods in the surreal valley of nature

Introducing new Deities

In the Netherlands, the ancient gods and goddesses vanished with the arrival of Christianity. Millennia-old traditions and belief systems gave way to new religious convictions, causing the deities that once were part of daily life to fade into oblivion. But Deelderman aims to change this narrative. He has a mission: the reintroduction of new deities into the Dutch landscape. With unwavering dedication and a profound love for the mystical, he crafts idol figurines symbolizing the forces of nature and the hidden magical world that surrounds us.

Deelderman introduces new deities into the Dutch landscape in a unique and artistic manner: by creating idol figurines and releasing them into nature. They become silent guardians and forgotten gods reclaiming their place in the landscape. These figurines can be found in unexpected locations: among the roots of an ancient oak, in the shadow of an abandoned windmill, or under a bridge where the rippling water carries your thoughts to another time. Yet sometimes they appear where you might anticipate them: at the edge of a heath field, in a secluded corner of a city park, or along a winding forest path.

His work invites a renewed connection with nature and an acknowledgment of the magical aspects often overlooked. Deelderman’s figurines serve as a bridge between the present and a mystical past, reminding us that the old deities may never have completely vanished—they simply wait patiently for our return.
